Watercress
but no Sandwiches, 300 Years of the Columbia Road Area ...
... is a book about the
Jesus Hospital Estate, its history and present.
It is written by Linda Wilkinson who has painstankingly compiled
this record from many hours of interviews with local residents
and from exhaustive research. Her words are beautifully illustrated
with pictures from local residents, photographs of the present
day by Tomoko Yoneda, and imaginative design and typography
by Jonathan Barnbrook and his studio.
The book won The Raymond
Williams Community Publishing Prize 2002.
This award from the Arts Council of England commends published
works of outstanding creative and imaginative quality that
reflect the life, voices and experiences of the people of
particular communities.
The Arts Council Press release said of the book ...
"Watercress But No Sandwiches
is an important, beautifully written and illustrated record
of an East End area and its people, it is at times funny and
moving, but never self indulgent."
Jhera would like to thank all of those residents who so kindly
donated money for this project.
